Fashionable professionals, attracted by the surroundings and creative martinis, gather in the posh lounge after work. 717 South's dining room, meanwhile, features Art Deco paintings, stained wood trim, high ceilings and an open kitchen. Expect imaginative takes on Italian classics ­ for example, manicotti stuffed with lump crab, scallops and shrimp, veal scalloppine, or penne with jumbo sea scallops and pesto. In keeping with the place's cosmopolitan feel, the menu also lists a handful of Asian-inspired dishes, sesame chicken and Szechwan duck breast among them.

YBOR CITY. Sometimes, you're looking for a fun, casual setting for dinner, but burgers or pizza just won't do. Such situations are what places like Acropolis are for. Ybor's Greek taverna serves up delicious Med staples like dolamdes, souvlaki, gyros, and moussaka both inside and outside. On weekend nights, crowds are entertained by live music and belly dancers ­ folks are even encouraged to join in on the traditional Greek practice of plate-breaking during the performances. Expansive windows invite views of the Hillsborough River into the space, and muted surroundings allow fresh flowers, modern artwork, and terrific cuisine to shine through. The menu updates classic fare, featuring such dishes as salmon carpaccio, lobster strudel with shiitake mushrooms, roasted Long Island duck, and chicken Wellington with mustard demi-glace. Steaks and a full bar are also available, along with an outdoor terrace.

Asian-Colonial elements of bamboo and wicker perfectly complete the sleek, contemporary design of the place. The menu is organized according to preparation techniques (steamed, grilled, woked, sizzled), and diners often find themselves fascinated by the goings on in the exhibition kitchen. Be sure to try the crackling calamari salad, and see for yourself why it is a longstanding favorite.
